## Timeline

### Our History&#x20;

Originally named "DeSciDAO", DeSciWorld began as an idea to bring research funding onchain through Peer-to-Peer (P2P) infrastructure. The core product design was to connect researchers and funders permissionlessly, even anonymously, to facilitate science that might disagree with official narratives.&#x20;

However, it soon became clear that:

&#x20;   a) the DeSci ecosystem was not large or influential enough to facilitate meaningful capital inflows for research;

&#x20; b) the nascient DeSci ecosystem was actually quite deep, yet was not doing a good job of advertising itself to the rest of the crypto ecosystem (we had never heard of "DeSci" until a few days after launching this protocol).

As such, DeSciDAO pivoted to become DeSciWorld.&#x20;

The objective shifted from creating a P2P funding platform to something much larger and more ambitious in scope: to become the global hub of DeSci, to use our platform to improve participation in this ecosystem, to provide outreach and web3 mechanism design assistance to other projects and generally to become a cultural vehicle for change within academia.

Together, these initiatives present an innovative platform to reshape the landscape of scientific research and how it is funded.&#x20;

# Understanding DeSci

Understanding decentralised science will provide a greater appreciation of DeSciWorld

DeSci is a quickly evolving sector that demonstrates how blockchain can leverage open science. DeSciWorld is a uniquely positioned organisation that believes that with the right infrastructure, DeSci can revolutionise research. To understand DeSciWorld you can consider four key areas:

1. Open Science
2. Onchain science
3. The DeScientist
4. Empowering the DeScientist with DeSciWorld

Should you be looking to engage or just understand DeSciWorld, we strongly recommend taking the time to digest the following information.

Please also find below a long-form podcast with founder Joshua, discussing DeSci with Web3FM:

{% embed url="<https://youtube.com/watch?v=o4UJpYLxx_A&ab_channel=Web3fm>" fullWidth="false" %}

1. **What is Open Science?**

DeSci pursues many of the same values that Open science upholds: decentralised and democratised access to resources and knowledge; more minds on the problem is superior; continuous and open evaluation of science is essential.

Many charters and definitions of open science can be found elsewhere. Institutions such as [UNESCO](https://www.unesco.org/en/open-science/about), [The Biden Administration](https://www.whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-updates/2023/01/11/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-actions-to-advance-open-and-equitable-research/) and the rather brilliant [UCL](https://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/open-science-research-support/open-science/8-pillars-open-science) each define Open Science differently. UNESCO poetically advocates for openness-where-appropriate, citing national security and other interests as justification for a continued multi-tier system of access to knowledge.

The Open Science movement tilled the fertile minds of academia and planted the seeds of change within. However, the renaissance of equitable access and unfiltered innovation never quite arrived.&#x20;

One core blocker to reaching that promised land was the state of the technology. Previously, distributed systems had little functionality and were costly to operate. Communication systems, funding, access to resources and machinery ++ have been limited by the technology available. With the advent of blockchain and AI however, the opportunity for truly open science is reinvigorated.

2. **Onchain science: DeSci**

DeSci, an abbreviation for "Decentralised Science," represents a new approach to the realm of scientific research and dissemination. By leveraging decentralised methodologies such as DLT powered by blockchain, DeSci seeks to challenge traditional centralised research structures, fostering a more inclusive and collaborative ecosystem.

> “Decentralized science (DeSci) is a movement that aims to build public infrastructure for funding, creating, reviewing, crediting, storing, and disseminating scientific knowledge fairly and equitably using the Web3 stack.” - [ethereum.org](https://ethereum.org/en/desci/)

<mark style="color:blue;">\[add illustration of DeSciWorld view on DeSci Model]</mark>

This model not only ensures the democratisation of knowledge but also reinforces the principles of transparency, reproducibility, and accessibility in scientific endeavors. As a progressive movement within the academic landscape, DeSci underscores the importance of returning scientific authority to a global collective, mitigating biases and potential censorships typically encountered in more conventional frameworks.

The diagram below illustrates the trajectory of the internet's history from Web1 to Web3 (+decentralised AI) and the effect this has on the collective intelligence and its ability to connect to others within the network. Web3 will not be explained in these documents but the principles that underpin it are essential to understanding DeSci.

<figure><img src="/files/hXKqAAQ3ngnpPtfKqXzg" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

3. **The DeScientist**

The DeSci pracitioner looks in many ways identical to the traditional academician, yet simultaneously unrecognisable. In both fields, what drives an individual scientist is unique. The pursuit of truth, money, happiness or prestige, the upbringing or tutorage they receive; the opportunities afforded to them - all vary wildly between peers and fields.

The core differentiator between a traditional scientist and a DeScientist is the infrastructure available to them. DeSci utilises the decentralised tools capable of standardising, interoperating, distributing, trustlessly verifying and securing the objects of science. It provides a new framework for a scientist to conduct their research, publish the findings, receive incentives and feedback for their work.

The DeScientist can be anyone around the world, and they need not be associated with a particular university or research group. They might be:

* providing groundbreaking research from a shed on their farm, connected via mobile hotspot to Web3 servers;
* a scientist that cannot obtain funding for the science they truly care about;
* a woman publishing in a country that decries the value of the fairer gender's mind;
* a dissident challenging the status quo anonymously in order to protect their family, yet save millions of lives from production of harmful pharmaceuticals;
* committed to countering harmful misinformation by providing factual and verifiable counterarguments;
* an institution leveraging the distributed network of scientists for their research task.

**These examples are arbitrary**, but you can see the potential for DeSci to change science for everyone, including the institutions many fear may be replaced.

4. **Empowering the DeScientist with DeSciWorld**

**A multifaceted approach**

Our mission is clear: to strengthen and connect the decentralised research community while offering unwavering support to innovators everywhere. We believe in making science accessible to everyone, ensuring it remains unbiased, uncensored, and resistant to external pressures.

To succeed in this mission we leverage three core pillars:

1. **Proof-of-Knowledge**

   An experimental protocol that allows anyone, anywhere to attest to knowledge through an on-chain mechanism. This creates an immutable statement that a certain user (wallet address) published an idea. Others can view this idea, dispute, utilise or expand upon it while maintaining the integrity of the original claim. Thus, creating a chain of provenance that facilitiates open sharing of information while retaining the incentive distribution among all contributors.
2. **Humanity at the Core**

   We believe that science should maintain its connection to this earthly realm by considering the humans in the loop at all times. Technology will never cease to innovate, thus it is our responsibility as the current wielders of the tech to ensure we can continue our stewardship of the chips. DeSciWorld maintains the position of keeping humanity's best interest at the centre of all plans for innovation.
3. **Community Empowerment**

   The decentralised science movement requires decentralised participation by definition. Through the desci.world platform and the World of DeSci conference circuit, we aim to keep everyone informed and engaged with minimal barriers to entry. The global science community is often handicapped by the loci of power in universities and business districts. With DeSci, participation can be achieved from anywhere.

In conclusion, we have moved from the ambitions of the Open Science community to the reality of the DeSci movement. Empowering globally distributed and uncensorable participation in science has been a oft cited goal but with advancements in DLT and blockchain, we are finally able to realise it.

# The Vision

> Both the educational and scientific estate and the intellectual community are handicapped by the belief... that their role is professionally passive - that it is to feel and think but not to act."\
> \- John Kenneth Galbraith (1967)

By uniting and empowering the decentralized research community, DeSciWorld hopes to facilitate a scientific renaissance in an authentic, transparent, and resilient manner.

## Why are we here?

DeSciWorld was created in September 2021, after the COVID pandemic exposed some fundamental concerns with the scientific paradigm: censorship, bias, illicit public-private partnerships, profiteering, inefficiencies, uninformed populations, uneven distribution of data and medicine, to name a few.

In a time of converging technologies, handing the right to determination of the future of humanity, the keys to the ignition of tools of destruction, the honour of shepherding the great masses of the world to ***any one entity*** is a folly.&#x20;

We must create tools that decentralise and distribute the power that is afforded to technology, before that power is absolute. &#x20;

## Knowledge Backed Economy

The team and partners at DeSciWorld believe in a better incentivised and more democratised future of knowledge creation and exchange. With the progress in AI systems, knowledge and its author may become seperated irretrievably. The future of knowledge and understanding is at risk of extreme, parasitic corporatisation. Data we produce currently inform inteliigent systems operating for profit and can be used in research without attribution. We deserve our share.

We propose a Knowledge-Backed Economy as a framework to reimagine the incentives for knowledge production, providing value streams to knowledge producers according to their usage within the Knowledge Market. Conceptually, providing fair value for usage of knowledge by AI systems can provide a new stratum to the economy for everyone to persue their passions and share with others.

Watch founder Joshua speak on this topic at the DeSci London 2024 conference:

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/fbnFEvfKRO8?t=7089>" %}

## Trifecta of Effective Integration

For the future of science to be sufficiently decentralised, we must include the full spectrum of participation. We propose the framework of tripartite collaboration between students, academia and industry to reach this end.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/OqPoCs6sau0N3vY9KV5q" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Students <a href="#ea99" id="ea99"></a>

Students are the lifeblood of science. Young, passionate and often wonderfully optimistic, we believe that the most powerful and revolutionary ideas will come from this group. On the one hand students tend to have less vested interest in continuing the encumbency of the status quo — the system has caused many issues in the world that they must now tackle. On the other hand, students have less to lose and are more willing to take calculated risks. DeSci is primed for their adoption.

### Academia <a href="#e8d3" id="e8d3"></a>

Academic societies dictate the direction of the populations as their research and recommendations influence policy at all levels. Think tanks are the sages of old. It is essential that the DeSci community demonstrates to these powerful substrates that decentralisation and the redistributive potential that comes with it is the best method to cure the ills that we face today. In order to influence policy, we must enlighten policymakers.

### Industry <a href="#id-2e3c" id="id-2e3c"></a>

Finally, the theoretical underpinning of students and academia wont achieve much without the practical applications of industry. The trend of the last century is for competent scientists to go where they receive the best compensation — Western scientific industry. Indian doctors go to Europe, African pharmacists go to Big Pharma, South American chemists do their research in the US. This has invariably left local research communities lacking in both talent and funding. A deadly cycle that can only be broken by brave individuals creating value in their own lands. DeSci can be a core toolset to empower local industry, who in turn can compete with the global scientific industry.

In a bid to achieve the truly distributed scientific community that Decentralised Science dreams of, we must bring the tools to the people who need them.<br>

# PoK - Proof of Knowlege

Knowledge is power.

{% embed url="<https://desci-world.gitbook.io/proof-of-knowledge/>" %}

{% hint style="info" %}
This page briefly descibes Proof of Knowledge. For more in depth information and tutorials, please visit the Pok Gitbook linked above.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/iOkgF8PNm3NNavEFSZ3K" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Pok - a Proof-of-Knowledge protocol

Pok is an advanced AI-based search system that offers a brand new method to quantify and value knowledge - the kEngram (kE). kE are an onchain data object that both maintains an unbreakable chain of provenance and tracks its usage by AI within the [knowledge market](broken://pages/jtUBYqqhrS36ObUQpFPf). Usage of kE is to be incentivised with the [$KNOW](/ecosystem/usddsci-or-usdknow-token) token.

Pok utilises a cryptographic proof that attests to the creation of an [kEngram](broken://pages/DBXs0vOYOYZaPZrkuzCB). kE are organised into indexes of knowledge called Brains. The index system is used to maintain an updated embedding set which can Pok can use to locate specific kEngrams as per query requirements. Each substantial interaction with a kE sends usage data to Pok which can be used to determine incentives, in a system we coin the "Knowledge Market".

As a fundamental building block towards a fully-fledged [knowledge-backed economy](/introduction/trifecta-of-effective-integration), the Pok protocol offers a comprehensive framework to fuel intellectual contribution and foster an environment of continuous learning and knowledge exchange.

# Research Collectives

An onchain tool for knowledge making and incentivising research

### Understanding Research Collective

Research Collectives (RC) are a subDAO mechanism for the decentralized science community to:

* organize around knowledge creation using indexes
* create and deploy kEngrams
* access [$KNOW ](/ecosystem/usddsci-or-usdknow-token)streams
* utilises simple and powerful DAO tooling such as token-gated governance and multisig wallets

Research Collectives enable distributed communities to collaborate, share knowledge and manage onchain treasuries in a secure and permissionless manner. With the integration of the PoK framework, these collectives provide an excellent means for researchers to generate, validate, share, and monetize their research.

### Why Research Collectives?

The concept of Research Collectives emerges as a fundamental mechanism in decentralized science, facilitating the convergence of researchers who share a fervent interest in a particular domain. This paradigm enables these individuals to forge connections, engage in collaborative endeavors, and collectively contribute to an expansive knowledge base.

The open science movement has long advocated for distributed communities to collaborate on research, to share their knowledge more widely with other groups and to self-organise around sovereign treasuries. As the technology of DLT, tokenised assets and cheap-to-use AI has progressed, it is finally time for these structures to take effect.

Members of the Research Collectives can autonomously govern themselves via the subDAO infrastructure. They may create and amalgamate kEngrams, uniting them in a coherent repository of collective research, leverage on-chain assets, participate in token-weighted governance and more.

### Create your Research Collective

<figure><img src="/files/4ZmShkYzRFYwht8Y0hwp" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

To create a Research Collective, the following steps need to be followed:

1. Creating Initial Research Engrams

* The individuals focusing on a specific research topic start by creating the first kEngrams of the research project. This can contain their existing research and knowledge.
* The researchers use the DeSciWorld protocols to submit their questions and answers on the platform.
* These kEngrams get validated through the Proof of Knowledge protocol and added to the DeSciWorld ecosystem.

2. Adding Research Engrams to the Collective

* Once the initial research engrams are created and validated, these engrams can be combined to create a Research Collective.
* This collective acts as a hub for researchers to combine their knowledge, compare notes, collaborate on shared topics of interest, and contribute to the body of research within that specific area.

3. Management and Expansion of a Research Collective

* The collective is overseen by its contributing researchers. Its expansion is facilitated by the addition of new kEngrams by both existing and new researchers.
* Researchers can join collectives that align with their interests or expertise, contributing their unique perspectives and research to the collective’s knowledge base.
* Researchers can also leverage the resources provided by DeSciWorld, including collaborative tools, validation services, and communication platforms to enhance their research efforts.

### Monetization of Research through Proof of Knowledge

The PoK (Proof of Knowledge) mechanism rewards knowledge contributions within the DeSciWorld ecosystem. This applies to the research shared within Research Collectives.&#x20;

* As the kEngrams within a collective are used and referenced within DeSciWorld, the creators of these kEngrams receive KNOW tokens as rewards.
* This system incentivizes the creation and distribution of high-quality research, providing a revenue stream to researchers while enhancing the overall quality of Research Collectives.

Alongside these three principle categories, there are also a number of traits that provide additional rarity distinctions for your NFT, such as:

* Biosafety Level (i.e. BSL1, BSL4)
* Movement (i.e. spin, burst)
* Assembly (i.e. particle, protein)
* Magnification (i.e. atomic, 63x)

These characteristics help to define each piece within the collection whilst also giving the viewer a deeper understanding of what analysis researchers use when interacting with their data.

### Unlockable Content <a href="#id-30b2" id="id-30b2"></a>

181 of the 999 Microbes NFTs contain some form of unlockable content. The unlockable content ranges from source imaging (pre-manipulation), reports and even raw imagery data such as this:

{% embed url="<https://twitter.com/DeSciWorld/status/1455111575547875332?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1455111575547875332%7Ctwgr%5E7945e3238406ad0c9f5e1f09c739ad721d5ac833%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.embedly.com%2Fwidgets%2Fmedia.html%3Ftype%3Dtext2Fhtmlkey%3Da19fcc184b9711e1b4764040d3dc5c07schema%3Dtwitterurl%3Dhttps3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fdesciworld%2Fstatus%2F1455111575547875332image%3Dhttps3A%2F%2Fi.embed.ly%2F1%2Fimage3Furl3Dhttps253A252F252Fabs.twimg.com252Ferrors252Flogo46x38.png26key3Da19fcc184b9711e1b4764040d3dc5c07>" fullWidth="false" %}

## Background

{% hint style="info" %}
The Microbes NFT was created by a private entity, outside of the DeSciWorld DAO. Thus, the DAO has no control over the proceeds of the sale. Ostensibly, the funds are used to assist in the initial bootstrapping phase of the DAO’s existence. Further, Microbes has a 5% royalty fee on all sales.
{% endhint %}

The Microbes NFT [contracts](https://etherscan.io/tx/0x61c300639534a3cba4c73b515f185ef54ac32e2a74fe509f6317833bd4fc1227) were deployed November 15th 2021 with the intention of funding development for the project that became DeSciWorld. Created outside of the DeSciWorld DAO’s jurisdiction, Microbes sales have been used by DeSciWorld to fund operations in the bootstrapping phase of the protocol's growth.&#x20;

DeSciWorld posted a [Medium article](https://medium.com/desciworld/launch-day-microbes-nft-a9ecc0d1d61e) explaining the Microbes NFT and its potential future use cases in 2021. Some of these stated potentialities are no longer relevant.&#x20;

# How to mint

### <mark style="color:blue;">Detailed Tutorial</mark> <a href="#detailed-tutorial" id="detailed-tutorial"></a>

#### Getting a Web3 wallet (Metamask) <a href="#getting-a-web3-wallet-metamask" id="getting-a-web3-wallet-metamask"></a>

DeSciWorld is a decentralized application (Dapp) running on top of the Ethereum blockchain. Sometimes we call these Dapps "Web3" and you will need a **Web3 wallet** to interact with them.

<mark style="color:blue;">Step 1:</mark> Download Metamask from <https://metamask.io/>.

<mark style="color:blue;">Step 2:</mark> Closely follow Metamask's instructions to safely set up, secure, and backup your private key phrase.Never input your seed phrase into anything. A legitimate Web3 protocol will never ask you for your seed phrase. Never give your seed phrase to someone else.

<mark style="color:blue;">Step 3:</mark> Use your preferred fiat on-ramp exchange to fund your new Web3 wallet with Ether (ETH). You will need ETH in your wallet to pay for your transactions.

#### Using your Web3 wallet <a href="#using-your-web3-wallet" id="using-your-web3-wallet"></a>

1. Head to [https://desci.world/nfts/microbes ](https://www.desci.world/nfts/microbes)
2. Connect your wallet to the DeSciWorld website.
3. Ensure your wallet is connected to Ethereum Mainnet and is funded with sufficient ETH.
4. Click "Mint".
5. Confirm the transaction within your Web3 wallet.
6. View your newly minted NFT on OpenSea!

# Role and Responsibilities

DSW DAO is the on-chain organisational entity that executes on the mission of DeSciWorld

### DSW DAO's Role

The primary role of DSW DAO is to facilitate the launch and sound operation of the DeSciWorld ecosystem, including desci.world, science.tech and the World of DeSci conference circuit. DSW DAO is an evolving structure that is governed by the [Microbes NFT](/ecosystem/governing-dsw-dao).&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/e0vThy087bnebvM2s2mL" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

To deliver on its role, DSW DAO will access the resources held in its multisignature wallet.

{% hint style="info" %}
The DSW DAO is not yet deployed, thus all information here is displayed for informational purposes only. It is suggestive and not prescriptive for the operations of DSW DAO. Full managerial authority over its goals and operations lies with the DAO Governors.
{% endhint %}

Responsibilities

1. Ship web3-enabled products and tools that unlock the potential of open research
2. Further the mission of DeSciWorld in a value-aligned way
3. Support the development of the DeSci ecosystem and global community
4. Maintain accountability in leadership, both internally to the DAO and in DeSci proper
5. Act as the issuing authority of $KNOW emissions contracts

***

## The relationship between:&#x20;

### DSW DAO and [Proof of Knowledge](/ecosystem/ecosystem-map)

DSWDAO is tasked with developing and deploying the Proof of Knowledge smart contracts. It will continuously deploy new additions, updates and fixes. It will maintain the infrastructure necessary to serve thousands of researchers. You can consider Proof of Knowledge an incubated platform by the DSW DAO.&#x20;

The $KNOW token emissions that are primarily used to incentivise Proof of Knowledge participation are deployed by DSW DAO.

### DSW DAO and [$KNOW](/ecosystem/usddsci-or-usdknow-token)

The $DSCI token is deployed via two methods:

1. Token Generation Event (TGE)
2. Emissions Schedule

Both the TGE and the Emissions Schedule will be organised and executed by the DSW DAO.&#x20;

### DSW DAO and [desci.world](/ecosystem/terminal)

desci.world is considered a curated platform; DSW DAO assumes role of curator.

The DAO is tasked with maintaining the dataroom, adding new features and engaging with listings and sponsors. It will continuously aggregate information and news for the public good of proliferating DeSci; working together with listed projects to provide the most optimal experience for both user and project teams.

Further, Spotlight and NFT listings are not permissionless; application and selection require discussions with DAO members to initiate.&#x20;

### DSW DAO and [science.tech](/ecosystem/science.tech)

The primary function of science.tech is to provide permissionless access to on-chain tooling. Through the Research Collectives, descientists have an open-governance mechanism for their research goals. Each Collective is a self-governing unit, seperated from the control of DSW DAO through its unique governance token. The Collectives provide a seperation of authority from DSWDAO, giving autonomy over finances and operations to each Collective.

Understanding the DSW DAO as a facilitator of DeSci makes for a better appreciation of the DAO's purpose; the goals of DSW DAO align with proliferating access to decentralised tools through science.tech.&#x20;

### DSW DAO and [World of DeSci](/ecosystem/world-of-desci)

The World of DeSci conference circuit requires a significant amount or coordinated effort and resources. The DSW DAO acts the primary facilitator and overseer of the process..

# DAO Structure

DSW DAO's organisational structure pulls inspiration from Haier's [RenDanHeYi](https://chozan.co/blog/digital-transformation-lessons-haiers-rendanheyi/) ([人单合一](https://www.haier.com/rdhy/2021/news/20210922_171236.shtml)) model and Vitalik Buterin's [Convex and Concave](https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2022/09/20/daos.html) decision making model, to create a structure that simultaneously promotes flexibility, efficiency and decentralisation.

View information about the core units of the DSW DAO below:

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Overview" %}
This system is optimised for efficiency-where-necessary and decentralisation-where-possible.

DSW DAO maintains that decentralised token governance must be the backstop to an on-chain organisation, however it can cause inefficiencies if all decisions must be decided upon by open governance. To ensure agility, we are combining autonomous "Pods" under the collective mission of DeSciWorld, with unique interactions and accountability structures.&#x20;

We hope to foster the strongest possible entrepenurial spirits, bolstered by independent targets and budgets, to motivate high-quality autonomous contributions.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Microbes Governors" %}
The Governors are the most decentralised portion of the DSW DAO, and the most powerful overseers of governance. Microbes NFT stakers are credited voting rights, as Governors.

Governors may vote on proposals submitted from only three sources:

1. the CORE team&#x20;
2. the Dispute Court&#x20;
3. from other Microbes Governors

The Governors will vote on key decisions such as CORE Team elections, large treasury unlocks, major strategy proposals and Executive or CORE Disputes.&#x20;

At any time, an Executive or CORE member may raise a Dispute that is arbitrated by Governors.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="CORE Pod" %}
CORE Pod members are elected on a biannual basis by the Governors.

CORE is responsible for the major strategic decisions of DeSciWorld. It will determine the overarching objectives of the Executive and Product Pods - as such, members must have extensive experience within this ecosystem.&#x20;

CORE will:&#x20;

* elect and oversee Executive and Product Pod Leads
* vote on budget proposals for Executive Pods
* maintain an effective internal communications framework
* handle internal disputes between Executive and Product Pods
* establish strong industry connections
* be a powerful spokesperson for DeSciWorld
  {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Executive Pods" %}
Executive Pods have domain-specific responsibilites and will house the bulk of the DSW DAO contributors.&#x20;

They are largely autonomous: they choose their targets, their management structure and their service users. Pods will regularly communicate with the other Executive Pods and CORE to synchronise and synergise.

Exective Pod Leads (elected by CORE) will organise their team and propose a monthly operating budget to CORE. They set their own KPIs and targets as a part of the budget proposal.

The core function of the Executive Pod is to provide an expert service to other Pods within the DSW DAO. They may also contract with outside organisations if there is spare capacity that the DSW DAO Pods do not fill.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Example**: *Design & Marketing Executive Pod*

The desci.world Product Pod is planning a new campaign for the launch of v2 UX.

Rather than creating marketing materials themselves, or outsourcing, they can "contract" the services of the Design & Marketing Pod, who have resources and expertise that cover the entire DeSciWorld ecosystem.

This enables the Product Lead to focus solely on their product, keep the team small and lean, and have instant access to a very high quality design team.
{% endhint %}
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Product Pods" %}
Product Pods are the smallest sub-units within DSW DAO.

The Product Pod's responsibilities are:

* create a strong product & brand identity
* develop a specific communications strategy
* conduct extensive market and user research
* gather continuous feedback and propose improvements

Each Product Pod will contract the services of the Executive Pods for its materials and resources, facilitated by the Product Lead. Leads are elected by CORE, and will manage their own product team and their own targets. The Product team is given a fixed budget but may propose more when needed. Hiring for the Product Pod should occur internally, with Executive Pod members been "loaned out" to Product Pods for a temporary period.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Dispute Court" %}
The Dispute Court is the "fail-safe" option to prevent internal capture and arbitrate disputes.

At any time, Executive Pod members or CORE Team may propose a Dispute to the Court. The Dispute will begin with a private, internal forum in which CORE and Executive Leads may discuss the issue to reach a solution before it goes to governance.&#x20;

If unanimous agreement cannot be reached, then the dispute is escalated to Microbes Governors vote.
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

## Rationale

<figure><img src="/files/ArzsaszHCqw12S3vIjsh" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

DeSciWorld is an ambitious ecosystem with plans to continuously ship exceptional user-facing products for years to come. As such, there are many movings pieces that require some level of centralised authority to keep within an acceptable efficiency bracket.&#x20;

However, for many reasons, we are committed to decentralisation and therefore must develop the structures to uphold that accountability to the public.

Vitalik's prescient identification of this conflict between efficiency and decentralisation in DAOs can be seen below:

> "One natural question that one might ask is: **isn't this kind of "DAO" just rebranding the traditional concept of multi-layer hierarchy?"**

> Two things that can help ensure that an organization built this way will actually turn out to be meaningfully decentralized include:
>
> 1. A truly **high level of autonomy for pods**, where the pods accept resources from the core and are occasionally checked for alignment and competence if they want to keep getting those resources, but otherwise act entirely on their own and don't "take orders" from the core.
> 2. **Highly decentralized and diverse core governance**. Normally, broad and diverse participation is a large tax on efficiency. But if (1) is satisfied, so pods are highly autonomous and the core needs to make fewer decisions, the effects of top-level governance being less efficient become smaller.

This second point here, "diverse core governance", is something that cannot be snuffed at. We are excited to bring broad, distributed governance from Microbes Governors, diverse leadership from the CORE team, and limited centralisation for focused ecosystem development through the Pods.

# Contribute

Seeking the curious and the capable

**Why contribute?**

Members that add value to the ecosystem are the most precious resource that we have and we want to nurture and support anyone that can meaningfully contribute to DeSciWorld.

We are experimenting with a variety of incentive mechanisms to attract, retain and reward those that help us on our journey. Stay tuned for more details on this.

**Who can contribute?**

Seriously, anyone with a keen attitude and an internet connection can become a valuable member of the DeSciWorld community and, potentially, the team. There are countless stories of people that originally had no skills or connections within the blockchain space and found a role in a project's community.

# Legal disclosure

*The discussion herein in this section is purely descriptive, not prescriptive, and does not represent a predetermined decision for the release of the $DSCI token. All decisions pertaining to the launch and release of the $DSCI token are to be carried out by the DeSciWorld pre-DAO. The following information is subject to change as new ideas or tooling becomes available closer to the launch. The planned time of launch is towards the end of 2022.*

*Despite the intentionally small initial market capitalization, we cannot predict whether the $DSCI token will retain its monetary value in the future. $DSCI token may lose its value if it does not receive adoption. At the same time, $DSCI token value may arise because of the network effect, as more people believe in its intrinsic value and utility.*

*No one has managerial control over $DSCI nor provides essential managerial efforts that affect its success as the DeSciWorld ecosystem has a fully decentralized structure.*

# Token issuance

DeSciWorld will not conduct a token sale or receive any funds from investors. 100% of the total $DSCI token supply will be issued to the Uniswap market (with either $USDC, $DAI or $ETH as the base LP pair) with intentionally low initial market cap to allow early adopters to establish inexpensive exposure to $DSCI if they believe it will have a larger market in the future.

No $DSCI tokens will ever be premined or retained by the project developers. $DSCI has a predetermined finite supply and no more additional $DSCI tokens will ever be minted.

### Definitions:&#x20;

* <mark style="color:blue;">**$DSCI:**</mark> An ERC-20 token with 2 decimals; no transfer penalties. $DSCI could potentially be staked to earn shares of protocol fees and $veDSCI emissions, under proposed models. Total supply TBC.<br>
* <mark style="color:blue;">**$veDSCI:**</mark> A non-transferrable, non-tradable token that is used for protocol governance. If a user unstakes their $DSCI tokens, they will lose their accumulated $veDSCI. Supply is determined by the amount of $DSCI staked.<br>
* <mark style="color:blue;">**$preSCI:**</mark> A valueless token that represents the holder’s membership to the pre-DAO and is used solely to vote on preDAO proposals.<br>
* <mark style="color:blue;">**$pre-veSCI:**</mark> A token identical in form and function to $veDSCI, except given immediately upon $DSCI genesis to holders of $preSCI

# DAO-Owned liquidity

Under proposed measures, the DeSciWorld pre-DAO may vote to launch 100% of the $DSCI token supply onto Uniswap v2 coupled with a determined amount of $USDC or $ETH in liquidity pairing.&#x20;

The DeSciWorld DAO would then own the UNI-V2 LP token that is issued upon formation of a Liquidity Pool. This LP would represent the initial amount of $DSCI / $\[funding token] that was deployed to Uniswap v2 and will be locked for an amount of time determined by the DAO.

# Layer-2 Deployment

The $DSCI token will initially be launched on Ethereum mainnet but the DeSciWorld DAO may quickly choose to port to an appropriate low-cost L2 or side-chain network to provide the best possible blockchain experience to the DeSciWorld community.
